APPENDICES/ATTACHMENTS
![]()
Two plurals are acceptableappendices and appendixes. Appendices is probably the most widely used, but appendixes is growing in use because it follows the general rule for making a word plural.
The appendices should be reserved for background information, detailed results, and analyses which support the specific conclusions and recommendations presented in the main body of the report.
Do not make the appendices a dumping ground for unnecessary information. Include only specific information that might be needed to help the reader(s) of the document understand the approach, analyses, results, conclusions, and recommendations presented. All other background information should be placed in a backup file.
Either a sequential numbering or lettering of individual items is correct. In longer documents, the choice depends upon how sections or chapters are numbered, i.e., items in the appendices are numbered when chapters are lettered, and items in the appendices are lettered when chapters are numbered.
Items are placed in the appendices in the order in which their references appear in the body of the report. Thus, the first appendix item called out in the report becomes Appendix 1 (or Appendix A), the next one mentioned is Appendix 2 (or Appendix B), etc.
Each item appearing in the appendices is referenced somewhere in the body of the report so that the reason for the item's inclusion may be clearly understood.
To avoid confusion, each appendix or attachment is given both a number or letter designation and a title. References from the body of the text should include both number or letter designation and the title:
