Welcome to KCI's Reader-Based Writing 2.0 Online Program!

I'm Steven Kanten, president of KCI. I have been teaching writing skills programs to Fortune 100 and 500 companies for over 25 years.

We agree with the saying, "good technical skills will get you in - good communication skills will get you ahead." This program is designed to help you acquire good written communication skills. The overall purpose of this training is to make you a better and faster writer of business emails.

To do this, the program teaches you how to write business emails using an efficient, repeatable process - the KCI POWR Writing Process. To learn this process, you will work through a series of short lessons and activities that provide opportunities to practice the process from the planning stages through the finalization of business emails. The POWR process you learn here is applicable to every kind of writing.

When you have completed this program, you will be able to:

  • Understand the factors that contribute to an effective business email.
  • Plan your email based on your readers and on your purpose.
  • Organize your email into a persuasive or informative format.
  • Write a clear and concise email quickly and efficiently.
  • Review your documents using a systematic, repeatable process.

The program is presented in four units.

Unit One: Business Communication Is Different -  Discusses the difference between business and non-business communication. Two time-saving tools (brainstorming and the POWR process) are introduced.
Unit Two: Plan - Discusses the importance of planning your email and of using planning techniques to clarify your purpose, target your audience, and select the points that will accomplish your purpose.
Unit Three: Organize - Discusses principles of effective organization. Introduces two common formats for organizing emails, PSS and SPSS.
Unit Four: Write and Revise - Describes the value of writing a quick draft that can be polished and finalized later. Provides lots of writing tips. Describes a repeatable, two-stage revision process that starts with "macro" issues and moves down to "micro" issues.

You must meet two requirements to receive a completion certificate for this program.

  1. Write an email using the POWR Writing Process and submit it for review. One of KCI's editorial consultants will review your email and provide customized feedback.
  2. Complete the Program Evaluation at the end of the program.

You'll receive a RBW 2.0 Certificate of Completion once you have fulfilled both requirements.
